On July 11, 2026, Samba! SOU AZUL performed a samba show at Waikiki Beach Walk.

Waikiki is visited by tourists from all over the world, including mainland America. How would samba, brought from Japan, be received in the heart of it all?

After the show, a collaboration with Okinawa's Ishigaki band, Kiyama Shoten, also took place. Samba and Okinawan music merged, creating a carnival where the audience danced together, transcending nationality and culture.

How would it be received by those unfamiliar with samba?

While cultures like hula and ukulele are widely enjoyed in Hawaii, in our experience there, opportunities to encounter samba seemed limited.

What would be the reaction of the audience seeing samba for the first time?

Could they enjoy it together, transcending differences in language and culture?

All the members approached the performance with a mix of nervousness and excitement.

As we left the dressing room, we saw the same smiles as in Japan.

As we emerged from the dressing room in costume, we were greeted by the smiles of an audience that were no different from when we perform in Japan.

One mother asked if we could take a picture together, and we took several commemorative photos with her children.

Seeing the children's eyes light up at the colorful costumes and people smiling as they aimed their cameras, we felt that the joy and exhilaration of samba could be conveyed just as powerfully, even in a place where it was being seen for the first time.

Even before the performance began, small interactions with the audience had started to form.

Show Composition Tailored to Hawaii's Energy

We structured this show to match the bright and open energy of Hawaii and Waikiki Beach Walk.

While incorporating Afro-samba, characterized by its powerful rhythms and body movements, we also selected melodic songs that would be accessible to those new to samba.

We focused on conveying not only the dynamism of samba but also the beauty and warmth of the music.

Even without understanding the language, people began to sway to the rhythm, clap their hands with smiles, and imitate the dancers' movements.

きいやま商店さんとのコラボレーション

Samba! SOU AZULのショーが終わると、ステージはそのまま、きいやま商店さんのライブへ。

出演後にステージから退出する動線がなかったため、私たちは舞台のそばで待機していました。

しかし、きいやま商店さんの音楽が始まると、自然と身体が動き出します。私たちもその場でリズムに乗り、観客の皆さんと一緒にライブを楽しみました。そして最後は「カーーニバレ」で盛り上がりました。

サンバショーの余韻が、そのままきいやま商店さんの音楽へとつながり、サンバと沖縄音楽による自然なコラボレーションが生まれました。

初めてサンバを見る海外からの観光客も、日本から応援に来てくださったファンの皆さんも、一緒に踊り、笑顔を交わす時間に。

演者と観客、サンバと沖縄音楽、日本とハワイ。それぞれの境界がなくなり、会場全体にひとつの大きな輪が広がっていきました。

ハワイで生まれた、新しいカーニバル

今回のステージで感じたのは、サンバを知っているかどうかは、楽しむための条件ではないということでした。

華やかな衣装に心が動き、リズムを聴けば身体が揺れ、誰かが踊り始めると、その楽しさが周囲へ広がっていく。

日本でもハワイでも、その反応は変わりませんでした。

そして、サンバと沖縄音楽も、異なる文化でありながら、人を笑顔にし、その場にいる人を一緒に巻き込んでいく力を持っています。

初めてサンバに触れた人、日本から訪れたファン、出演者、観客が、同じ音楽の中で自然につながる。そこに、私たちが目指す「カーニバル」の姿がありました。

ハワイで生まれたこの輪を一度限りで終わらせず、きいやま商店さんとのつながりも大切にしながら、新しい文化のコラボレーションへと育てていきます。
