Into a city of dance that has continued for 400 years, samba leaped in one night.
August 13, 2026.
One of Japan's leading festivals, Tokushima City's "Awa Odori".
The rhythm of "Zomeki" echoed from here and there in the city, and amidst the fervor of countless dancers and spectators – this year, the rhythm of samba leaped in.
Planned by Tokushima Samba Lab and Office TOWAIE, and operated by the "Awa Odori x Samba 2026 (Pilot Edition)" Executive Committee, "Awa Odori x Samba 2026 – Pilot Edition -". Introducing the rhythm of samba, born from a different culture, into Tokushima, a city of dance for 400 years.
This was a one-night-only grand experiment to search for a landscape no one had ever seen before.
Running through the streets of Awa Odori as one "Ren"
In Awa Odori, groups of dancers are called "Ren".
This time, Tokushima Samba Lab also took to the streets like a "Ren".
We didn't just perform on a designated stage.
Playing samba instruments and dancing, we moved through the streets of Tokushima, filled with the energy of Awa Odori.
Changing locations, we performed "guerrilla samba" where samba suddenly started in various places around the city.
Playing, dancing, moving, and playing again.
For about two and a half hours, we delivered samba with the city itself as the stage.
When the samba started, people followed.
What was impressive that day was the audience's reaction. People who were initially just passing by stopped when they heard the samba music.
They started dancing. They cheered.
And when the performance moved to the next location, people began to follow along. Before we knew it, a flow of people naturally formed behind the samba. Shouts arose, and the audience members became part of the rhythm. There were no designated seats or stages.
In that moment, a carnival was spontaneously born with the people who were there.
Was "Samba within Awa Odori" an anomaly?
Awa Odori and Samba. The music, the dance, and the places they originated are different. However, when you entered the swirl, there was a surprising amount of commonality.
太鼓の音。
身体を動かすこと。
人と人がリズムを共有すること。
そして、演者と観客という境界を越えて、街全体が踊りの場になっていくこと。
阿波踊りの「踊る阿呆に見る阿呆」。
そして、サンバのカーニバルが持つ、見る人まで巻き込みながら一緒に楽しむ力。
違う文化なのに、その根底にあるエネルギーはどこか似ていました。
400年続く文化は、新しいものを受け入れながら進化する
今回のテーマのひとつにあったのが、
「徳島という街の懐の深さを知ってもらうこと」
でした。
長い歴史を持つ文化というと、「昔からの形を守り続けるもの」という印象を持つかもしれません。
けれど阿波踊りの街で実際に感じたのは、それだけではありませんでした。
伝統がありながら、新しい表現も受け入れる。
その時代、その場所、その人たちのエネルギーと混ざりながら、祭りそのものが生き続けている。
その大きな渦の中へ、今年はサンバが飛び込みました。
阿波踊りのぞめきと、サンバのバテリア。
日本とブラジルという枠を越えて、ただ同じリズムの中で身体を動かす。
そこには、この夜、この場所でしか見ることのできない景色がありました。
「あほう」の国へようこそ。
踊る人。
演奏する人。
追いかけてくる人。
声を上げる人。
いつの間にか、その場にいた人たちみんなが、この実験の参加者になっていました。
「阿波踊り×サンバ2026 – Pilot Edition -」
その名の通り、今回はまだPilot Edition。
完成されたイベントではなく、
「阿波踊りの街にサンバが飛び込んだら、何が起きるのだろう？」
という問いから始まった挑戦です。
けれど、その先には確かに、これまで見たことのない景色がありました。
